CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Unfortunately, it wasn’t only one monster.

From her pool float, she caught glimpses of them through the gaps in the frantic VIPs. Tan fur. Red eyes. Long arms. Even longer claws… And the monsters were all wearing formal vests and slacks.

The scared conference-goers broke through the restricted area in their mad attempt at escape. Several tripped or were pushed and fell into the pool, their impacts splashing water on Maine and Death.

Upon instinct, Maine gripped Death’s hoodie and angled her head back at the side of the pool, at their escape.

Before she could get them both there, a tan blur streaked through the crowd and lunged right at Death.

With a curious look on his face, Death sat there, cool as could be while the monster in formal wear careened toward him. Maneuvering awkwardly upon her float, Maine sat forward and rammed a fist into the creature’s snout. Clawed hands at the ends of gangly arms flailed, slicing into Maine’s arm. Blood welled from her arm and exploded from the creature’s nose as it sank in the water, still trying to swipe at its target.

“We’ve got to go.” Maine reached for the solid edge alongside the pool, but the monster’s claws tore through her and Death’s floats, and they collapsed into the water.

“Where are they coming from?” someone yelled.

Maine broke through the pool’s surface and shoved her drenched bangs aside as she surveyed the rooftop.

There had to be at least four or five of the creatures.

No, more, Maine realized as another one clambered over the raised roof with a hungry scowl on its apelike face adorned with fangs.

This wasn’t good. They’d ended up trapped in a pool on a rooftop being scaled by long-armed, formally dressed hairy monsters.

Reaching into the water, she gripped Death’s hoodie and hauled him out. As she swam over to the pool’s side, she felt the tension as the monster took another waterlogged swipe at Death. Death’s body shook with the impact, but he called, “I’m fine!”

Horrible bloodthirsty yowls and growls assaulted the night air as Maine hauled herself up out of the water and pulled Death up with her. The monster in the pool attempted to follow but couldn’t seem to get the hang of how to swim—it could barely keep its ugly head above the water.

Water cascaded off both their soggy frames as Maine said, “Mantle, what are we up against?” She focused on a monster zigzagging through the fleeing crowd toward them.

Formal Wendigos. Weaknesses: water. Fresh meat. Bronze-tipped spears…

“Why do you always give me stupid weaknesses I can’t exploit? Do you honestly expect me to carry a rocket launcher around in my purse? Or bronze-tipped spears?”

Do you have to be so snooty? I’m doing my job.

She quickly assessed the roof for an exit route. “Then do it better! Give me something I can use.”

So they were up against some more summoned monsters. This time, wendigos.

Noff bounded up to her, and they formed up side by side with Death at their back. “Weaknesses?” he yipped, all professionalism.
